Come let us go up to the mountain of the Lord.” Micah 4:2
Since ancient times, mountains have been viewed as holy places, and mountains hold a significant place in the traditions of almost every major religion. The Judeo-Christian tradition is particularly rich with stories of mountain-top experiences. Moses and Elijah are only two of the Biblical figures who encountered God on a mountain, and Jesus himself often retreated to the mountains to pray. Even the desert mothers and fathers of the early church made their way to the high places to commune with God.
Mountains touch our souls. Their distant peaks pierce the heavens and beckon us to reach for something higher. Shrouded in mist, mountains symbolize the mysterious spiritual realm that is often hidden from our sight. Their beauty speaks to us of something beyond our everyday world and makes us long to draw near to the God of creation, to reconnect with the One who made each of us.
The Cascade Mountains of Central Washington are some of the most beautiful in the world, and a wondrous place in which to base a ministry of creating sacred space through retreats, workshops, and writing. Here, God calls us to follow Jesus’ example to come away and pray, to withdraw from the world for a few hours or days as our spiritual ancestors did, to receive God’s wisdom and healing and to hear God’s call on our lives.
